Paediatricians warn against mobile phones

Tue 13/03/07 - A group of Flemish paediatricians has started a campaign to stop children under 16 years of age from using mobile phones. That’s according to a report by the daily Het Laatste Nieuws.

The doctors will act as a sort of pressure group under the name “Beperk de straling” (limit radiation). They have started a petition to demand a ban on the use of mobile phones by children under 16.

Various paediatric departments in hospitals have posters on display to warn parents against the dangers of mobile phones.

Michèle Verboven, one of the paediatricians who took the initiative, says “it’s almost 100% sure that mobile phones pose a serious health threat to children.”

“Mobile phones are not toys. The government has failed to inform parents about the dangers,” adds Jan Allein, another forefront runner in the campaign.

The Flemish Association of Paediatricians will consider the issue this week and is expected to take a common stand on the matter.

From headaches to depression

Scientific research increasingly shows a link between the use of mobile phones and a disorder in brain activity among children.

According to the latest studies carried out in Spain, a brain function disorder can cause an immunity lapse. The children’s ability to learn could also be affected, as well as the mental health of the child. The latter could result in headaches, sleeping problems, concentration lapses and deviant behaviour including depression and aggression.

Swedish research proved that radiation emitted by mobile phones reaches the interior of children’s brains. This could result in the development of brain tumours in the long run.

Die gemeinnützige Organisation ECRI (früher: Emergency Care Research Institute) rät weiterhin von einer Aufhebung der Beschränkungen für den Gebrauch von Mobiltelefonen in Gesundheitseinrichtungen ab...Wie auch immer, obwohl es Veröffentlichungen gibt, die zeigen, dass die Risiken kleiner geworden sind, sind sie nicht komplett ausgeschaltet, und es gibt Dokumentationen von Fällen, in denen Mobiltelefone medizinische Geräte gestört haben.

Eine von drei Abteilungen der indischen Panjab-Universität durchgeführte Studie kommt zu dem Ergebnis, dass Mobilfunkmasten die beherrschende Quelle elektromagnetischer Strahlung im Umfeld von Städten seien und dies zu Krankheiten an Pflanzen und Tieren führen könnte.... Dr. Kohli sagte, dass elektromagnetische Strahlung Wärme erzeuge, aufgrund derer Mikroorganismen im benachbarten Erdreich getötet würden. Dies wiederum beeinträchtige die Organismen, die sich von diesen ernährten. Der ökologische Kreislauf werde gestört... Der maximale Strahlungsgehalt wurde in Sektor 46 festgestellt und lag bei 97,926 Mikrowatt/Quadratmeter.

Den Zusammenhang für die schwindenden Lebensräume der Menschenaffen und der rasant wachsenden Handyzahlen stellt eine Studie des Worldwatch-Instituts aus den USA dar. Der Forscher und Autor der Studie Erik Assydourian belegt darin, dass durch den Abbau des Erzes Coltan, das für die Herstellung der Mobiltelefone benötigt wird und das praktisch nur im Kongo zu finden ist, die Affen zunehmend verdrängt werden. Dies ist laut Assydourian auch dadurch begründet, dass die Bereitschaft zum Recyclen der Handys fehlt und die Rohstoffe für neue Geräte in der Natur gewonnen werden müssen. Im Jahr 2005 gab es rund 2,1 Mrd. Handys weltweit.

Coltan (auch Koltan) ist ein Roherz in Zentralafrika, aus dem vorrangig das Metall Tantal (Ta) gewonnen wird.

Why would the government want an accounting of every single head of livestock on your little farm? If you have a single chicken, goat, sheep, cow, horse, rabbit, or other listed animal, the government will know it. If one of those animals has a baby(s), it must be reported within 24 hours of birth. If you butcher an animal to eat, it will have to be reported. If one dies of natural causes, it will have to be reported. When the “spy in the sky” beams down and determines you have an animal missing, will you be able to account for it or will you have to pay the huge fine that will be imposed?......

Here is our new paper in the Bioelectromagnetics Journal.

We measured the ELF (the extra-low frequency EMF) from PDAs like Blackberry and Treo units. ELF is produced during switching of the battery inside the PDA. Note that the measurements were given in microtesla (so multiply by 10 to get milligauss).

Since people typically wear them around all day long, this is essentially a measure of body exposure.

Emissions up to 975 milligauss were recorded; during email send and receive functions, the units commonly had spikes of 30 to 60 milligauss. Some busy people we tested had nearly continuous flow of emails during work and even after-work hours.

This would dwarf nearly all other sources of ELF that people are commonly exposed to in daily life.

The only way one might get such high readings on a day-to-day basis would be to hold your head against an electrical subpanel on the wall, unless you have some unusual occupational exposure.

Several measures for prudent avoidance are recommended....using a land line in preference to a PDA for phone calls, keeping the unit off or in "not transmit/receive mode" except to download and send emails, placing the PDA several feet away at your work space or desk, not wearing the PDA in a pocket or on a belt, placing it on the adjacent seat when you drive, and not using it as a cell phone without an earpiece or on speaker (if that is an option).

Obviously children should not use them at all; and caution might be advisable for women who are pregnant since there is some evidence that intermittent exposure to 16 mG and above may be linked to increased risk of miscarriage. Men might take note that ELF magnetic fields have been reported to have adverse effects on semen quality and sperm motility.

Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) Cell Phone Units Produce Elevated Extremely-Low Frequency Electromagnetic Field Emissions

Initial tests indicate that personal and occupational use of personal digital assistants (PDAs or palm- held wireless units) produce high intensity bursts of extremely-low frequency electromagnetic fields (ELF-EMF). These emissions could result in comparatively high ELF-EMF exposure in persons that carry a PDA close to the body (i.e., in a pocket or on a belt); or held to the head for cell phone conversations. ELF-EMF emissions of 10 uT were recorded on PDAs during normal office use over a 24 h test period. Results of ELF-EMF measurements show that email transmit and receive functions produce rapid, short-duration ELF-EMF spikes in the 2 – 10 uT range, each lasting several seconds to over a minute apparently depending on file download size. Some units produced spikes as high as 30 – 60 uT during email activities. Cell phone activity on PDAs produced continuously elevated ELF- EMF readings in the 0.5 – 1 uT range, as opposed to the rapid spiking pattern for email receipt and transmission. Switching the PDA unit from ‘‘OFF’’ to ‘‘ON’’ position resulted in single ELF-EMF pulses of over 90 uT on two units. Email downloads into the PDA can occur randomly throughout the day and night when the unit is ‘‘ON’’; thus the user who wears the PDA may be receiving high-intensity ELF-EMF pulses throughout the day and night. The frequency of email traffic on the PDA, and the power switching unit (battery unit) may affect the frequency and intensity of ELF-EMF emissions.
